In a match between two very different teams at St. James’ Park, Alexander Isak scored the match’s only goal. City won the Champions League, Premier League, and FA Cup last season, but any hopes of breaking the record with a fourth were quickly destroyed.

Erling Haaland, who stayed on the bench for the entire match, was not included in Pep Guardiola’s eight changes from the team that defeated Nottingham Forest 2-0 on Saturday. Eddie Howe made changes after a Saturday 8-0 thrashing of Sheffield United.

But the hosts were unable to take control until the Newcastle manager brought on Anthony Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes at halftime. After Joelinton’s race had exposed the City defense, Isak had the easy chore of putting the ball in the back of the net at the far post. Nicolas Jackson’s goal gave Chelsea a 1-0 victory over Brighton, keeping the situation at Stamford Bridge from getting worse.

The Blues have only won one of their first six Premier League matches under Mauricio Pochettino, in part due to the Senegalese’s waste in front of goal. On the other hand, Jackson simply knocked in a pass from the excellent Cole Palmer after 50 minutes.

Ramsdale reaction

Aaron Ramsdale, who had been widely removed by Mikel Arteta, responded by enabling Arsenal to win 1-0 against Brentford. Despite an attack by Brentford after the break, Reiss Nelson’s goal in the eighth minute put the teams together. For the past three matches, Arteta has preferred David Raya to Ramsdale in goal.

The England International, nevertheless, was important to the Gunners’ success as he made a stunning save to keep Yoane Wissa from tying the score. After just three minutes, Liverpool was behind Championship-leading Leicester before coming back to win 3-1. The Foxes got out to a quick counterattack that was finished by Kasey McAteer.

The visitors' goal was under pressure by Jurgen Klopp’s team, but they had to wait until after the break to equal. The Netherlands scored the equalizer when Ryan Gravenberch set up Cody Gakpo to score in the far corner. When Klopp went to his bench to find a winner, Dominik Szoboszlai’s stunning goal provided it.

Twenty minutes from the end, the Hungarian captain scored from outside the area, sending the ball into the top corner. The tie was then protected by Diogo Jota’s backheel effort off the far post.

Everton improved on their season-opening Premier League victory at Brentford on Saturday with a strong 2-1 win at Aston Villa. Last month, the Toffees were destroyed 4-0 at Villa Park during a league match, but Sean Dyche’s team was able to avenge that loss with goals from James Garner and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

League One Lincoln made West Ham work hard until Tomas Soucek’s goal gave them a 1-0 victory. Bournemouth defeated Stoke 2-0, while Fulham defeated Norwich 2-1. Blackburn defeated Cardiff 5-2 in an all-Championship match, scoring the title’s most goals.
